Phoenixville Takes a Stand on Graffiti

Under the changed ordinance, graffiti must be removed within 15 days.

Phoenixville is taking action against graffiti that mars the community and can lower property values, the Borough Council said.

At the Borough Council meeting last week, the council voted to amend Chapter Six of the Borough Code of Ordinances, which previously had no mention of graffiti.

The changes to the code were approved by a vote of 6 to 2, The Phoenix reported.

"The Council finds that graffiti is a public nuisance and destructive of the rights and values of property owners as well as the entire community," the new section of Chapter Six reads.

Under the changes, anyone who defaces a building in the borough must remove the graffiti within 24 hours. If for whatever reason the perpetrator does not remove the graffiti, the property owner has 15 days to do so.

The ordinance was adopted April 8.
