PUC Urges Customers to Pay Up, or Risk Service Termination

Utilities will be turned off regardless of customers' income levels, the state commission said.

Pennsylvania residents who are behind on their utility bills need to get current, or else they face service termination on April 1, the state Public Utility Commission announced Thursday.

The terminations will occur regardless of income, the PUC said.

“The severe winter cold has meant we are all using our heating systems more, which means higher energy bills,” said PUC Chairman Robert F. Powelson. “Many across Pennsylvania are struggling to pay their bills. Past-due electric and natural gas bills can lead to termination as of April 1 no matter what your financial situation. If consumers receive a termination notice, do not ignore it. Taking the steps to avoid termination means customers also avoid reconnection fees and security deposits, which can add up and make service reconnection expensive.”

if you have received a termination notice, the PUC says to call your utility company immediately. "Resources are available to help consumers maintain service," the PUC said.
