5 Pa. Schools Under Investigation Over Handling of Sex-Abuse Complaints

Five Pennsylvania schools are among colleges and universities being investigated by the U.S. Department of Education for possible Title iX violations.

Carnegie Mellon, Franklin and Marshall, Penn State, Temple and Swarthmore were all named in the report released Thursday by the Education Department's Office for Civil Rights.

Title IX, often linked with college athletics, specifically "prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in all education programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance," the Department of Educations said. The law was passed 1972. Any school, whether a college or a K-through-12 school, that receives federal funding, must comply with Title IX.

The schools are all under investigation for the way they have handled complaints of sexual violence and harassment, though no details of the individual cases were released.
