Barkley Elementary Gets in the Seuss Spirit

Students donned stovepipe hats and were entertained by a bevy of guest readers.

The famous Dr. Seuss quote was the mantra for the day March 2, as students across Phoenixville Area School District celebrated Read Across America Day.

“You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child,” adorned flyers sent home to Barkley Elementary School parents.

The day was jam-packed with guest readers, and all central administrators from PASD took part and read to the students at Barkley. Phoenixville Mayor Leo Scoda also took a turn reading, along with a host of other community members.

John Colarusso, owner of Petrucci’s Ice Cream, was a big hit as a guest reader.

“He brought individual copies of the book titled Ice Cream Shoppe for each of our first graders,” said Barkley Principal Virginia Salava.

Barkley youngsters were encouraged to don red and white or wear T-shirts depicting Dr. Seuss characters in honor of the author’s birthday. Crazy hairstyles—a la Cindy Lou Who or Daisy-head Mayzie—were also welcomed. Additionally, each student received a red and white stovepipe hat. Teachers got in on the fun, too, with many dressing up to honor the occasion.

A highlight of Read Across America Day was when all Barkley students gathered to sing “Happy Birthday” to Theodor Geisel, more commonly known as Dr. Seuss.
