Details of New PASD Teacher Contract Revealed

It took more than three years to hammer out a deal. Here's what resident are now paying for.

Earlier this week the Phoenixville Area School District Board and the Teacher's union each voted to ratify the new contract agreement reached back in early August.

In the days since, several Patch readers have asked about the details, specifically the Spousal Insurance plan.

According to a presentation posted on the PASD Website, the new contract includes a "voluntary spousal opt-out payment of $2,000" if all benefits for a covered employee's spouse are voluntarily discontinued.

Other "Big Picture" points under the contract as announced by the district:

  • Teachers, who have not had a raise since 2009, will get a one time bonus of $2,000 and a one percent pay raise over what they earned in June 2009.
  • Eligible teachers will also move one step up on the salary ladder over where they were in 2009
  • Teachers will (for the most part) pay more for their health insurance premiums.
  • Class schedules will be more flexible with the removal of the contracted "bell schedule"

You can read all the details of the new teacher contract here on the PASD website.

The contract is retroactive to July 1, 2010. It took more than three years for the two sides to reach a settlement. Teachers had been working under the terms of the expired contract during the protracted negotiations.  The newly-ratified contract will expire on June 30, 2014.
