Phantastic Phantom: Sydney Marks

Phantoms junior Sydney Marks sets the tone for the field show in our weekly student spotlight.

Friday night was big night for the Phoenixville Phantoms as a football squad, as a marching band and for one melophone-playing musician.

Friday marked the first time in her life that Phoenixville junior Sydney Marks performed any kind of solo. It also was the first time the marching band performed this year’s field show “It’s Not All Black and White” at a football game. Marks and her brass companions are featured as the show kicks off with the 80s rock anthem “White Wedding."

“I will be nervous the first time I do it,” said Marks during the week leading up to the opener. “I have been playing since elementary school and this is a first for me. I am very excited about this season, as I will get to drum major as well.”

Influenced at an early age by her mother, who is deeply involved with the Phantoms Music Boosters, Sydney is looking to pursue her post-high school education at Princeton or Penn State and loves performing along with her brother Ryan, who is the brass section leader.

“It is like a rush of adrenaline when you hear the crowd scream as we take the field,” added Marks. “I just want to stay focused and not rush the song. My mom pushed me a bit in elementary school when I started playing, but when I got to middle school I just fell in love with playing. I am so lucky to have this opportunity.”
