Phoenixville Area School Board Honors Exemplary Students

Students were honored for their recent accomplishments.

Several Phoenixville Area School District students were lauded for recent accomplishments at the last school board meeting.

The German Club recently attended the Delaware Valley Deutschfest. The club adviser is Christine Tavani. Members honored were Brynna Christie, Ian Straka, Connor Herring, Megan Krause, Stephen Rakoczy, Amy Tirney, Joelle Doriani, Kathryn Sutton, Hannah Weicheld and Scott Carr.

Linnea Phillips was recently accepted to the University of Pittsburgh Health Careers Scholars Academy Summer Program. Formerly known as the Governor's School, it's a four-week program with rigorous acceptance requirements.

The recipient of this year's Valley Forge Military College Scholarship Award was Joe Giampietro of Phoenixville Area High School.

Tim Hackett was honored in the WPVI (Channel 6) Best of the Class 2011 feature.

During The Philadelphia Classical Society's 72nd Annual Classics Week, several Phoenixville students participated in the project and academic competitions. The group is advised by Nicole Curry. Participating were Savannah Mudd, Taylor Horgan, Alexandra Wertman, Rachael Wisely, Anna Thompson, Jeff Potts, Benjamin Turner, Benjamin Cushing, Krysta Leo, Billy Parker, Kenneth Rosti, Amy Hill, Meghan Clark, Adelaine Lazzell, Kenneth Rosati, Karlyn Small, and Amber Mangabat.

The Elementary Chess Team participated in a tournament. Several students placed. Nicholas Sinaplus of East Pikeland Elementary and Xandra Coleman of Barkley Elemetary tied for third and fourth places. Eliana Malhotra of Schuylkill Elementary took second place, and Tommy Brower of East Pikeland Elementary took home first place.

Megan Krause, a sophomore at the high school, was accepted to the 2011 Iowa Writers Studio. Of 500 applicants, only 132 were accepted.

Several students placed in the Future Business Leaders of America state competition. Evan Talbert took 11th in the state in hospitality management; Dan Kain placed 21st in the state in sports management; Carly Milano placed 12th in the state for accounting I; and Ben Cushing placed 31st statewide for business math.

In the National Latin Exam Competition, five students received honors. Ben Cushing received magna cum laude recognition, along with Amy Hill. Savannah Mudd garnered a silver medal, Anna Thompson received cum laude honors and Olivia McGinnis earned a certificate of merit.
