Phoenixville Honors Former Hoops Coach

Bill Detweiler led the basketball team to the best record in school history in 2007.

Bill Detweiler made a name for himself by drawing up schemes that caught the opposition off guard. On March 29, it was the coach who was on the receiving end of a surprise.

Last month at the Phoenixville Polish Club, more than 75 former players, friends, and school administrators surprised the former Phoenixville basketball coach with a tribute night held in his honor.

Detweiler was celebrated for his dedication to the students of PAHS and his development of an outstanding basketball program.

Over a seven-year period beginning in 2002, Detweiler compiled a 123-65 record, winning PAC-10 championships in 2005 and 2007. In 2009, his team won the PIAA District One Title, while the 2007 Phantoms were undefeated in the PAC-10 and finished with a 26-4 record, the best in school history.

Former players who attended the event emphasized that the lessons their coach taught them stuck. Detweiler, they said, helped them attain success in academics and sports while in college.
