Phoenixville Students Win National Recognition

These Phoenixville Area School District Students are among the top one percent in the nation.

Ten students from the Phoenixville Area School District are being honored as among the best academic performers in the nation.

The National Merit Scholarship program has announced that ten PASD students have qualified as semifinalists and commended students in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

According to an announcement from the district there are approximately 50,000 students (of the 1.5 million who applied) across the country who are honored as the top performers on the PSAT /National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
PASD National Merit Scholar Students are:

  • National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists:  Ben Cushing, Savannah Mudd, and Gina Vitale
  • National Achievement Scholarship Program Semifinalist:  Mary Ann Odete
  • Commended Students:  Anna Leigh Bodo, Taylor Horgan, Thomas Kawchak, Kyle Kobilka, Andrew Peterson, and Summer Stephens

Semifinalists, representing less than 1% of high school seniors, will have the opportunity to attain Finalist standing, and have to compete for some 8,000 National Merit Scholarships worth about $35 million, and earn the Merit Scholar title.  A semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.
