Two Phoenixville Student Journalists Honored

A senior and a junior who attend school in Devon are among the distinguished honorees.

Two high school students from Phoenixville are among top scholastic journalists recently inducted into The Devon Prep School's Quill and Scroll Society which honors high school journalists.

The school sent the following announcement about the honorees to Patch.

Eighteen Area Devon Prep students were inducted into the school’s chapter of the Quill and Scroll Society, the international honor society for high school journalists. During a ceremony in Calasanctius Hall, ten seniors, seven juniors and one sophomore were welcomed into the Society by Mr. Larry Theuer moderator of Devon Prep’s student newspaper the Devon Dialogue.

The new inductees include:

Seniors Sean J. Bevan of Phoenixville, Marco DiLeonardo of Media, Michael T. Horbowy of Malvern, Michael J. Lawrence of Collegeville, Matthew J. McDevitt of Berwyn, Jackson R. Misko of Media, James P. O'Shea of Broomall, Kevin S. Sheng of Chester Spring, Patrick J. Shields of Norristown, Jefferson Toro of Darby;

Juniors Pandurang R. Bharne of Norristown,  Russell T. Emery of Phoenixville,  Paul Landon Farnsworth of Royersford,  Michael G. Knudson of Broomall, Andrew J. Loper of Springfield, William J. Moreno of Wayne, Christian J. Nave of Lansdale,  Shyamal B. Patel of Norristown.

 

Among the qualifications for membership into Devon Prep’s chapter of the society are: a GPA of 3.5 or higher in the last two semesters; superior work in some phase of high school journalism; submission of at least two quality articles in the last year; recommendation by the Devon Prep Quill and Scroll committee; and approval by the Society’s executive director. The Induction ceremony included the distribution of the badge of membership, honor cords for the seniors to wear at Commencement, and a candle lighting ceremony demonstrating the core values of the Society: Truth, Learning, Leadership, Loyalty, Initiative, Integrity, Judgment and Friendship.

 

In addressing the new inductees Mr. Theuer said, “Membership into Quill and Scroll involves responsibility which you must not forget - the duty to devote yourself to the welfare of your school, and to any other group or community to which you may later belong. In a few years the obligation of leadership will fall to you, make certain that you are fully prepared and fully qualified to assume responsibility.”

 

The Quill and Scroll International Honorary Society for High School Journalists was founded in 1926. The society recognizes individual student achievement in journalism and scholastic publication. Since the society’s founding more than 14,000 high schools in all 50 states and 45 foreign countries have been chartered.
