Whiz Kids of the Week: PASD Honors Achievers for German Exam Results

Several students were honored at a recent school board meeting.

Students studying German at Phoenixville Area High School recently took the National German Exam and those garnering high scores were honored at Thursday’s school board meeting.

“This is a great accomplishment for our students,” said Craig Parkinson, high school principal. “They took this German assessment exam a few weeks ago and we’re just excited with how well they did, so we want to recognize them this evening.”

German teacher Christine Tavani made the presentations, and the students in attendance took certificates and shook hands with board members.

Tavani explained that the National German Exam is run by the American Association  of Teachers of German. Students receive SAT-like scores. This year, nearly 25,000 students took the exam nationwide, Tavani said.

Earning a silver on the exam, or a score similar to approximately 700 if compared to the SATs were:

Those at the bronze level, which would be an SAT-like score between 650 and 700, were:

  • Stephen Rakoczy
  • Nicole Mueller
  • Meghan Savoy
  • Kathryn Sutton

Several other Phoenixville Area High School students also garnered recognition for achievement on the exam, scoring above 600 when compared to the SATs.

This is the first year students from PASD participated in the National German Exam.

“I’m very pleased to see the students of Phoenixville taking advantage of this opportunity, “ said Superintendent Dr. Alan Fegley.
