Phantastic Phantom: Matt Bierer

Phoenixville Patch will have a weekly student profile from PASD.

In a new feature to Phoenixville Patch we will be highlighting one Phoenixville-area student each week for a special achievement, accomplishment or overall performance.

Phantoms senior Matt Bierer, who will be competing this fall as the golf team’s No. 1 seed, is the first Phantastic Phantom profile.

Bierer, who finished seventh overall in the Pioneer Athletic Conference (PAC-10) singles tournament in 2010 and missed qualifying for regionals by one stroke, finishing 18th overall in District One, will lead Phoenixviile this season in the quest to return to the PAC-10 Final Four.

“Matt is one of our leaders,” said golf coach Steve Winnich. “He has become very consistent, which is a result of the way he has matured over the past four years.

"He has always had the skill set. The leadership aspect of his game will really help us as a team achieving our goals.”

“The coolest thing about golf is that you never know what is going to happen,” said Bierer. “Every time you get on the course, one shot can change the game. On any given swing you can either make or break a round, which makes it a challenge.”

As a junior in 2010, Bierer claimed second team All-PAC-10 status as he helped lead the Phantoms to the playoffs, along with seniors Matt Rubino and Corey Smith.

“You can’t replace two guys like that,” said Bierer. “I know this season that Brendan [Bonner] and I are going to be depended on to score each match. I am looking forward to the challenge. Our goal is to get back to the Final Four and we have to step it up to get us there.”

When asked what three people would make up Bierer’s all time foursome to play with, which could include any living person in the world he responded with three professional golf icons. The group that would be hitting the links at Pebble Beach would be Bierer, South African golf legend Ernie Els, Pat Perez and one of the world’s best players of all time and world-class person Phil Mickelson.
