Tennis: Phantoms Ready for What's Next

The Phantoms tennis stars take the court again Friday for districts.

Phantoms head coach Leo Scoda knows a lot about tennis. In his 48 years of coaching, the hard court fanatic has seen his share of drama and excitement as the post-season looms.

Another thing coach Scoda knows is his team and what they are capable of.

On Saturday, as his doubles pairings finished second and fifth overall in the Pioneer Athletic tournament, Scoda was confident that his Phantoms would be traveling to Holy Ghost Prep to battle in the second round of the PIAA class AA tennis team championships.

“I think we match up well with Church Farm School,” said Scoda on Saturday. “Holy Ghost Prep, who we probably will get next, will be a challenge as they have two very good single players.”

On Monday, the number three seeded Phantoms took care of busines as they defeated Church Farm School, sweeping the Gryffins 5-0, led by District One singles runner up Karlyn Small with a straight set 6-1, 6-2 win.

Phantoms junior Doug Reeves and sophomore Jeff Potts also won their matches to seal the team win without dropping a set.

Senior John McInally, who will be competing this weekend with Small at the Ditrsict One doubles tournament, reunited with doubles teammate sophomore Chris Walsh and the team of sophomore Ryan Caigan and senior Brendan Stone proceeded to post straight set wins as well to advance Phoenixville into a battle with number two ranked Holy Ghost Prep, who defeated Octorara 4-1 to advance.

On Tuesday, the Phantoms dropped the match 4-1 to No. 2 seeded Holy Ghost Prep. The doubles teams of Small and McInnally, Walsh and Reeves will play at districts on Friday.

“In any given match there are a few points that can have an impact on the outcome,” added Scoda. “If you look at our season, a couple of points here and there and we could have been unbeaten and won the PAC-10 instead of dropping our only two losses 4-3. A match always seems to come down to a few points. We have to make sure we make the most of our chances to win those points.”
