Traffic Headaches in the Region Start Tuesday

Several major road construction projects are underway or about to get underway and one of the biggest starts Tuesday.

Summer is road construction season and a big project is about to get underway in the region.

That's just one of several ongoing projects that PennDOT has on the schedule for August. The following regional information is provided by the office of State Representative Duane Milne (R-167).

Route 29
Beginning Tuesday, July 31, preliminary work will start on the $4.2 million project to improve travel on Route 29 in Charlestown and East Whiteland townships, Chester County. All of the construction is expected to be completed by June 2014.

To prepare for the new slip ramp to the PA Turnpike, PennDOT will widen Route 29 to provide an additional northbound and southbound through lane between Yellow Springs Road and Phoenixville Pike/Charlestown Road to enhance traffic flow and reduce congestion. Amazing to me, this part of Route 29 currently accommodates 15,000 vehicles per day.

The improvements on Route 29 also will include five-foot wide shoulders; intersection upgrades and new signals at Yellow Springs Road/Warner Lane, Whitehorse Road and Charlestown Road/Phoenixville Pike; and storm water management facilities.

PennDOT’s contractor also will widen Charlestown Road from Phoenixville Pike to just south of the Charlestown Elementary School to provide an additional through lane in each direction as well as road shoulders; widen Phoenixville Pike east of Charlestown Road to provide an additional westbound left turn lane; widen Phoenixville Pike west of Charlestown Road to provide a gore area (triangular patch of land) opposite the dual left turn lanes; and widen Yellow Springs Road to add an exclusive right turn lane.

Motorists traveling through the Route 29 construction area will face intermittent lane closures and possible slowdowns weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Route 926 (Street Road)

PennDOT also will begin a year-long series of repairs and resurfacing of 12 state highways, beginning this week with Street Road (Route 926) in Willistown Township. The $11 million project, slated for completion by August 2013, will improve more than 50 miles of worn roadway in Chester County.

From July 30to Aug. 2, one lane will be closed on Route 926 between Route 10 (Limestone Road) and Route 796 in Upper Oxford and Londonderry townships from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. for milling. Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through these work zones as crews work during overnight hours to resurface these state highways.

Additional Roadwork

For your information purposes, other state highways scheduled for milling and paving at various times over the next year are:
