Ursinus College Film Festival: "Ocean Heaven"

The annual International Film Festival at Ursinus College is underway. All films, which will be shown with English subtitles, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. in Olin Auditorium, followed by refreshments and conversation in Olin 104. All screenings are free and open to the public.

Oct. 3: Ocean Heaven, Chinese, directed by Xiao Lu Xue --- This 2010 film tells the story of a terminally ill father (Jet Li) who tries to teach necessary life skills to his 22-year-old autistic son (Zhang Wen) so the young man can survive on his own.

Nov. 7: The Intouchables, French, directed by Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano --- In this 2011 comedy-drama, which was inspired by a true story and broke box-office records when it was released in France, an affluent paraplegic (François Cluzet) looking for a caretaker who won’t pity him hires---and then forms an unlikely bond with---an ex-con (Omar Sy) from the projects.

Nov. 21: Himizu, Japanese, directed by Sion Sono --- Set in Japan after the 2011 tsunami, this drama focuses on a teenage boy (Shôta Sometani) who tries to keep his family’s boat-rental business afloat, despite interference from his abusive father and a local crime boss seeking to collect on an outstanding debt.

Dec. 5: 678, Arabic, directed by Mohamed Diab --- The problem of sexual harassment in Egypt is the basis for this 2010 film, which is based on real events and tells the stories of three women: a mother (Boshra) who endures unwanted groping on her daily commute on the bus; an artist (Nelly Karim) who is attacked by a group a men at a soccer game; and a stand-up comic (Nahed El Sebai) who files the country’s first sexual harassment lawsuit after being dragged by the chest by a man in a moving car.
