A Few Correct Guesses for Then and Now Photo

Several readers had the right answer this week.

The Then and Now photo was a bit tricky this week, but a few of you hit the nail right on the head. 

Kudos to Brian Sakal, G Rapp and Mark Chester, who the location as 124-126 Gay St. at the corner of Gay and Walnut streets. PHANTOM was about a block off, and Brad Gubanich was oh so close with a guess of 128-130 Gay St.

Thank you to Mayor Leo Scoda who recently donated the original photograph to the Historical Society. The residence is located at 124-126 Gay Street. Look closely and you can see the wrought-iron fence still exists. Notice, too, that in a lot of these old photographs the American flag is on display. It’s interesting that the current residents continue the stars and stripes tradition.

History: 'A military organization called Griffen Battery, or also known as Battery C of the National Guard of Phoenixville owned town lots #2 and #3 in John Morgan’s subdivision plan. On May 21, 1885, Captain John Denithorne, manufacturer of bridges, represented the group at the property’s sale to Samuel R. March. March immediately improved the lot with speculative housing and subsequently sold the parcel to Daniel Rixstine the following year.' – From the Chester County Historic Preservation Office, 1985.
