Cut-a-thon Raises More Than $2,200 for Trey Love

A charity benefit was held in Limerick over the weekend.

LIMERICK-As human beings we let some pretty ridiculous stuff get the best of us. We stress over things that in the grand scheme of life flat out just don’t matter. Humans have some remarkable traits and qualities that every day are exhibited, sometimes for the worst.

We have all witnessed the rude person talking on the cell phone in the line at your local bank in front of you, and not even hanging up the phone as they interact with the teller.

We've seen the person, again usually on the phone, who cuts you off on the highway or the driver in front of your car who waits the entire cycle of a green light to turn left then darts through when it turns red.

We see it everyday, and it can give cause to wonder, “What have we become as a society?”

Well, humans also have the largest capacity for compassion and generosity when it’s needed most.

Katrina, the Tsunami in Thailand, 9/11 and the disaster in Japan: when it appears like there is no hope, that’s when the “human” trait of humanity is seen the most.

On Sunday, people from all walks of life flocked to Erin’s Salon, Etc. in Limerick, as the salon owned by Erin Grohoski, the mother of a toddler, was holding a cut-a-thon. All proceeds from the day as well as raffle sales and donations were donated to the Trey Love Foundation.

Trey Love, the bright-eyed 4-year-old has been battling neuroblastoma, a rare but lethal type of cancer that attacks the nerve tissue in children. Trey has been the subject of so many local public events to help the family ease the burden of the astronomical health care costs that even events manager Lori McClure has begun having a tough time keeping track.

“We have been amazed by people and their generosity,” said McClure. “It has helped so much as well. Missy [Trey's mom] spends part of every day writing thank you notes to well wishers and donors. We have even had donations and mail from Japan, Canada and Australia.”

The event at Erin’s Salon, Etc. brought in more than $2,200 that went directly to the Trey Love Foundation, whose goal is obviously to help defer health care costs for Trey and make it possible for mom and dad to take him to Disney World, but also provide assistance for other children battling cancer and other diseases along with their families.

“I never expected to be as busy as we were,” said Grohoski. “It was so much fun. We had people everywhere and a line out the door when we opened. All of my stylists had so much fun doing this for such a sweet little boy. We hope it helps. I am just amazed at how much people wanted to help.”

Phoenixville sophomore Abby Gould and her mother Su, who traveled from Phoenixville on Sunday to Erin’s Salon to participate in the cut-a-thon as they saw the story posted on Patch, were ecstatic to be involved with such a worthwhile event.

“We have wanted to something but with everything going haven’t been able to,” said Su Gould. “This was something we just had to do. It was great haircut and a great cause, and it feels good to be able to do something,”

“I have a younger brother,” added Abby Gould. “I can’t even imagine what they are going through as a family. It’s important to help people when you can.”

With food, friends and people working together, there was a great atmosphere at Erin’s Salon the entire as Piazza Presto next door donated pizzas all day and there were treats from community members that were donated as well.

“Mike and Missy have a very strong faith,” said McClure. “But it has been the efforts of local businesses like Erin’s that have given them strength to get through the bad days. They have just been overwhelmed at the amount of love and support that they have received every day from people they have never even met.”
