Church Street Elementary School was constructed in 1860 at a cost of $9,568.38 thanks to the efforts of John Griffen, who was president of the school board at the time. The photograph was taken circa 1890. In 1959 the school closed and the building was purchased by the Phoenix Hose Hook and Ladder No.1.

In 1961 the building was remodeled by the Phoenix Hose Hook and Ladder No.1. The second story was removed as were the interior walls. Today the Church Street building is the Social Hall annex to the Fire Company.
