According to a recent survey, county 12th-graders binge drink at rates above the state and national averages.
The recently released results of the 2011 Pennsylvania Youth Survey Report paint a complicated picture of the drug use habits of Chester County middle school and high school students. The report, which is conducted every two years by the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, showed that while rates of drunk driving and painkiller use have decreased among Chester County students, rates of binge drinking and driving under the influence of marijuana remain high relative to state averages. (On April 3, Communities that Care is hosting a town hall to discuss the survey responses Phoenixville Area School District students provided. Click here to get information on the event.) Below are some additional results from the 2011 Chester …

The disease, which spread through local schools last year, can be deadly to infants.
The Chester County Health Department recommends that everyone receive a vaccination against pertussis, aka whooping cough, especially those who interact with infants. Pertussis vaccinations (DTaP and Tdap) are available at walk-in clinics held Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Government Services Center in Westtown. The cost is $35, although free vaccinations are available to those who meet certain eligibility requirements. The health department's recent quarterly newsletter noted that there were 134 cases of pertussis in 2012, by far the most of any vaccine-preventable illness. The newsletter gave an overview of the importance of immunization: Whooping cough (Pertussis) is a respiratory infection that can cause a baby to have severe…

The businesses failed their recent restaurant inspection.
The following Phoenixville businesses were inspected by the Chester County Health Department in the month of February. An important caveat: the language of these reports can be misleading, as they often describe potential problems as actual problems. For example, “presence of rodents/insects” could mean there's an infestation, or it might just mean the business in question left a back door open—which could lead to an infestation. The results of each of the state's 2013 health inspections are available here. 259 Schuylkill Road, Phoenixville Inspection Date: 2/26/13 Result: Out of Compliance Violations Employee observed handling cooked donuts with bare hands while putting on toppings. To protect foods from contamination, food employees …

The store was shut down by the county on Monday, but reopened Tuesday afternoon.
That was fast. Dunkin Donuts was shut down by the Chester County Department of Health on Monday for a failure to comply with county code, but reopened not long after 1 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, a store employee has confirmed. It's still unclear what violation shut down the 123 Nutt Road establishment. A statement taped inside its then locked door gave no indication of the nature of the violation. A phone call to the Chester County Health Department has not been returned. The last county health inspection on record for the store took place on Feb. 3, 2012. The coffee shop had one violation—related to exposing food to cross-contamination—and received a total score of 95 out of 100. Patch will update this story as more information becomes …
