The Colonial Almost Became A Drapery Warehouse: Here's Why It Didn't

Emmett Gruici and the late George Hinkle, who reportedly saved the theatre, will be honored by the Schuylkill River Heritage Center this week.

The Schuylkill River Heritage Center is celebrating a pair of Phoeixville men this week who used their wiles to preserve a beloved local landmark, The Phoenix is reporting. Emmett Gruici, 87, and the late George Hinkle will be honored by the center on October 4 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Foundry. The pair, among other exploits, teamed up to save The Colonial Theatre in 1995 when its beleaguered owner was considering selling. According to the paper, here’s what happened next. [Schuylkill River Heritage Center president Barbara] Cohen said Gruici and Hinkle talked to the owner, hosted a successful event at the theatre and later talked he owner into selling the theatre to the Phoenixville Area Economic Development Corporation with the idea …

Bringing Home The Bacons

Michael and Kevin Bacon of The Bacon Brothers performed a concert at the Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville on Friday to benefit the theatre and French and Pickering Creeks Conservation Trust.

Richard Callene enjoys The Bacon Brothers' music, showmanship and contribution to the Chester County community.  But just once, he'd like to see Kevin Bacon's wife, Kyra Sedgwick, at one of the band's shows, he said and smiled. Callene and his wife Kim, of Perkasie, have been to three Bacon Brothers concerts. On Friday, the Callenes were at the Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville to see the band play for the fourth time. "It's a really fun, entertaining evening. They interact with the audience," Richard Callene said. "We own all their CDs," Kim Callene said. Friday's event raised money for the theater and French and Pickering Creeks Conservation Trust. The non-profit groups partner to support and grow cultural events and land preservation. …

I hope the Bacon Brothers do not leave their diesel tour bus idling behind the Colonial Theater for the entire duration of the show like they did several years ago. It is non-sensical to be performing a concert to raise money and awareness for environmental causes, and to have a bus idling for several hours outside while they perform! Would love to see the Patch check on this if they provide any …   more ›

Cheers! Colonial Holds Whisky Tasting

Guests raise a wee dram to benefit the Colonial Theatre.

As the audience filed into Phoenixville's Colonial Theatre Friday night to screen Oscar hopeful The King's Speech, few suspected that upstairs, a sold-out crowd was enjoying a very different UK import. Irish-born Riannon Walsh, a world-renowned expert on single malt whiskies, led 70 guests on an exclusive tippler's tour around the world at the Fourth Annual Robert Burns Memorial Whisky Tasting. Now a resident of East Coventry, Walsh is the president of Cloonaughill Celtic Malts, Inc. and author of Whisky Dreams: A Culinary Journey through the World of Single Malt Whiskies. On Friday, Walsh introduced aficionados and novices alike to five distinct whiskies, guiding them through the proper method for tasting a single malt (drink it out of a …
