It's making sure street signs have correct spelling, among other tasks.
Don't let the name fool you. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Pavement Survey van isn't just looking at pavement. You might have seen the vehicle on local state roads recently, as on Route 252 in Tredyffrin Township in the attached photo. According to PennDOT spokesman Gene Blaum, it's a Location Referencing System van, and it's driving around making sure that the information in PennDOT's computer system matches reality. Blaum explained via email that the van verifies the locations of features like signs and bridges throughout the state. It even does spell-check: There are no cameras on the van. The small, square box on the bumper is an infrared target sensor used to calibrate a distance-measuring instrument. A GPS receiver …

Khalif Abdullah Ali was found guilty of multiple felonies after he helped fugitives obtain drivers' licenses bearing the identities of innocent people.
A Philadelphia man who worked as a supervisor at the PennDOT Driver License Center in Frazer was convicted Wednesday of multiple felonies, including identity theft, tampering with public records, computer trespass and related offenses. Khalif Abdullah Ali, 44, manipulated the PennDOT computer system to supply wanted criminals with authentic drivers' licenses bearing the identities of innocent citizens. Keep up on breaking news by liking Malvern Patch on Facebook. He created the new licenses by processing them as name changes, but the only change in each case was the removal of a comma meant to separate the first name and middle initial in the backend of the system. The change allowed Ali to print a new driver's license with a new …

A look at the injunction against the Voter ID Law.
Judge Robert Simpson issued a preliminary injunction Tuesday morning, halting certain aspects of the Voter ID Law from impacting the November presidential election. While the decision does not repeal the law that requires citizens to show photo identification to vote, if upheld, the ruling allows registered voters to cast ballots without an ID. To issue an injunction on the law, Simpson was tasked to consider two questions—does the issuance of IDs "comport with liberal access" that the General Assembly required, and will no voter disenfranchisement exist if the law is implemented this fall? Liberal Access? In returning the case to Simpson, the commonwealth's Supreme Court said then-current procedures were "contrary" to liberal access—a …
