The Chester County Food Bank will be in the spotlight for the next event in Phoenixville Public Library’s partner-sponsored “Community Gardening around the Village” program series. Kale Doughty, Community Food Access Educator, will speak at the Library Monday, April 29 at 6:30 PM. Kale will speak about the Food Bank, their garden programs, and their reach around the county. Formed in 2009, the Chester County Food Bank secures, manages, and distributes food to those in need. They work with more than 160 partner agencies in Chester County to distribute nearly 3.5 million pounds of food to those with limited or uncertain access to adequate food. This event is free and open to the public. The program will also be livestreamed on Zoom for those who cannot attend in person. Community Gardening around the Village: Growing Healthy Communities

Books on Tap, Phoenixville Public Library’s book discussion group for twenty- and thirty-something adults, will meet Tuesday, April 30, 7:00 PM at La Patrona Mexican Restaurant &amp; Tequila Bar, 400 Bridge Street, Phoenixville. The group will discuss Ottessa Moshfegh’s acclaimed novel, Eileen. 
So here we are. My name was Eileen Dunlop. Now you know me. I was twenty-four years old then, and had a job that paid fifty-seven dollars a week as a kind of secretary at a private juvenile correctional facility for teenage boys. I think of it now as what it really was for all intents and purposes—a prison for boys. I will call it Moorehead. Delvin Moorehead was a terrible landlord I had years later, and so to use his name for such a place feels appropriate. In a week, I would run away from home and never go back. This is the story of how I disappeared.

Phoenixville Public Library will host a special presentation, “The Roots of Black Music in America” with Karlus Trapp, on Thursday, May 2 at 6:45 PM. Producer, songwriter, teacher, and troubadour, Karlus Trapp leads a 100-year journey back through time, offering a fresh perspective about the music of America’s Black musical giants through song, story, and history. Hear Scott Joplin during the birth of Ragtime. Dance to the Charleston in the 1920s. Play air guitar with Chuck Berry or sing along with the Supremes in the 60s in the Motor City. Warning: Attending this show you may find yourself smiling, humming, or tapping your feet for hours afterward... and you’ll be surprised what you may learn!
From public libraries and arts centers, to school groups, to senior centers, Karlus Trapp has presented this show solo or with ensemble to thousands of people since its inception. During the pandemic, Karlus performed over 60 live virtual shows via Zoom throughout the U.S., from Southern California to the seacoast of New Hampshire.

Phoenixville Public Library will host a free presentation, “Ancient Egyptian Architecture”, on Monday, May 6 at 6:45 PM. Egyptologist Sherin Motawea will be the speaker. Ancient Egyptian architecture is not one style, but a set of styles differing over time but with some commonalities. In this lecture you will learn about the different types of architectural elements, how some of them evolved through time, their symbolic meanings, and functions. The lecture will take you on a journey into ancient Egyptian architecture. Replicas will also be displayed to see and touch.
Sherin Motawea is originally from Egypt. She studied Egyptology. In 1998, Sherin obtained her first Master of Arts in Museum and Heritage Studies from the University College, London, U.K. She then became the Head of the Egyptian Museums Department at the Supreme Council of Antiquities under the supervision of renowned Egyptologist Dr. Zahi Hawass. She has led a number of educational programs for all ages in Egyptian museums.
