Phoenixville Public Library

Phoenixville Public Library will host a presentation by local author Theresa Werba on Thursday, May 16 at 6:30 PM. “Poetry, Adoption, Autism and Abuse: The Myriad Facets of Author Theresa Werba” will feature Theresa reading from her fourth book of poetry, What Was and Is: Formal Poetry and Free Verse, a unique collection of the best of her work over the last forty years. She will also share highlights from her book When Adoption Fails: Abuse, Autism, and the Search for My Identity. Theresa, who was an undiagnosed autistic adoptee, endured an abusive adoptive home, several identity changes, a disinheritance, and the discovery of her biological mother and father. She also will share from her book Warning Signs of Abuse: Get Out Early and Stay Free Forever, in which she writes to help women identify the warning signs of abuse early on in a relationship and provides information and encouragement for getting out and staying out. Copies of Theresa's books will be available for purchase and signing at the event.
Theresa Werba is the author of seven books, four in poetry: Jesus and Eros: Sonnets, Poems and Songs (Bardsinger Books, 2015), Longer Thoughts (Shanti Arts, 2020), Sonnets (Shanti Arts 2020) and What Was and Is: Formal Poetry and Free Verse (Bardsinger Books, 2024). Her work has appeared in such journals as The Scarlet Leaf Review, The Wilderness House Literary Review, Spindrift, Mezzo Cammin, The Wombwell Rainbow, Fevers of the Mind, The Art of Autism, Serotonin, The Road Not Taken, and the Society of Classical Poets Journal. Werba holds a Bachelor of Arts in vocal music performance from Skidmore College and a Master of Music with distinction in voice pedagogy and performance from Westminster Choir College. Phoenixville Public Library will host a free Zoom presentation by Craig Harris, author of Rise Up! Indigenous Music in North America, on Monday, May 20 at 6:30 PM. More than powwow drums and wooden flutes, Indigenous music is at the heart of North America's soundscape. There's Indigenous-rock, Indigenous-pop, Indigenous-jazz, Indigenous-hip hop, Indigenous-reggae and much more. Join percussionist, historian, storyteller, and the author of recently-published Rise Up! Indigenous Music in North America (Bison Books), Craig Harris for an eye-and-ear-opening and multimedia introduction to the music of the continent's First Peoples. Author Talk: Craig Harris: "Rise Up! Indigenous Music in North America"

The Fourth Wednesday Readers, Phoenixville Public Library’s in-person book discussion group for adults of all ages, will meet at the Library Wednesday, May 22 at 1:00 PM. The group will discuss "The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women" by Kate Moore. 
As World War I raged across the globe, hundreds of young women toiled away at the radium-dial factories, where they painted clock faces with a mysterious new substance called radium. Assured by their bosses that the luminous material was safe, the women themselves shone brightly in the dark, covered from head to toe with the glowing dust. With such a coveted job, these "shining girls" were considered the luckiest alive--until they began to fall mysteriously ill. As the fatal poison of the radium took hold, they found themselves embroiled in one of America's biggest scandals and a groundbreaking battle for workers' rights. The Radium Girls explores the strength of extraordinary women in the face of almost impossible circumstances and the astonishing legacy they left behind.

Books on Tap, Phoenixville Public Library’s book discussion group for adults in their 20s and 30s, will meet next on Tuesday, May 28, 7:00 PM, at Molly Maguire’s Irish Restaurant &amp; Pub, 197 Bridge Street, Phoenixville. The group will discuss Stephen King’s award-winning novel, Mr. Mercedes. 
In the predawn hours, in a distressed American city, hundreds of unemployed men and women line up for the opening of a job fair. They are tired and cold and desperate. Emerging from the fog, invisible until it is too late, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes. Months later, an ex-cop named Bill Hodges, still haunted by the unsolved crime, contemplates suicide. When he gets a crazed letter from "the perk," claiming credit for the murders, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, fearing another even more diabolical attack and hell-bent on preventing it. Brady Hartfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again. Only Bill Hodges, with a couple of eccentric and mismatched allies, can apprehend the killer before he strikes again. And they have no time to lose, because Brady's next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim thousands. Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

Phoenixville Public Library hosts the next event in the co-sponsored “Community Gardening around the Village” series on Thursday, May 30 at 6:30 PM. “A Visit to a Sustainable Neighborhood of the Future” will be presented by Tony Buck. Describing himself as a citizen sustainability advocate, Tony Buck has painted a 4’ x 7’ mural of a future sustainable neighborhood to show the public what it would look like. In his presentation, he will take you for a walk around this neighborhood, highlighting the features that make the neighborhood more sustainable. Although it’s a future vision, Tony says that all of these features can be achieved today. Tony Buck is a retired Master Gardener, permaculture designer, and maker. He lives an organic gardening lifestyle and cares deeply that the planet is in overshoot. This event is free and open to the public.
